Are we truly in a state of Merdeka?
After fifty years of “Independence”, what has actually been achieved? Are we truly in a state of Merdeka, when the status of Islam is being challenged and we have Islamophobes running around doing just that?
The “social contract” (whatever that means, since its only an agreement between Alliance party leaders without any public referendum) is constantly being challenged by those who want to revise it in their favour. The position of Islam as the Religion of the Federation is constantly being threatened, apostasy is not being dealt with comprehensively by the authorities concerned. Some quarters are even appealing to the Agung that His Majesty should take steps to allow for “freedom of religion” (read: apostasy), which is an irony since as the Head of Islam, His Majesty certainly cannot allow for something which contradicts the teachings of the Deen! Those who insist that this country is “secular” seemed to have overlooked the fact that the Constitution explicitly provides for public funds to be allocated to religious institutions. A secular document will not allow for such provisions in the text. Malaysia is not truly “Islamic” in the fullest sense of the word, but neither are we “secular”.
Come to think of it, I have never agreed to any “social contract” which results in a demotion of the position of Islam in the country.
The struggle for Independence started on the 25th of August 1511 and stretched until 30th of August 1957. Westerners came here with Gold, Glory and Gospel battle cry yet they managed only the first two thanks to Muslim ulamas struggle. We should all remember names like Adipati Yunus, Syarif Hidayatullah (Sunan Gunung Jati), Kiyai Gede Pemanahan, Maulana Yusuf, Sheikh Nuruddin Ashi, Sheikh Hamzah Fansuri, Sheikh Shamsuddin al-Sumatrani, Sheikh Nuruddin ar-Raniri, Imam Diponegoro (May Allah be pleased with them all) and countless of other Malay warriors. Do not get deceived by their today’s nationality. There were no Malaysia or Indonesia back then, only Malay Archipelago that was seriously under the threat of losing its Muslim identity. We could have ended up like the Philippines Malays.

What can we say about the pathetic state of people like Zainah Anwar, Malik Sarwar, and the rest of the bastards who are now the new enemies of Islam

Only when we honor and uphold our own values over that of the colonials is when we are truly independent. In this case, as muslims our very own scriptures from the Quran and the Hadiths over that
of western secular philosphy, law, culture and social order. But sadly this is not the case even among muslims in Malaysia.
